JBLK-BFMQ: Basics of Free Motion Quilting on your Home Sewing Machine

In the first 3 hour session, Lori will discuss a lot of basics about prep work (needles, thread, batting, backing, pinning, etc.).  She'll also talk about various aids for quilting tools that are available (gloves, starch, the Quilt Sew Easy discs, etc.).   Additional discussion will cover things that help the quilting process (machine maintenance, ergonomics, M&M's, margaritas!!!)  The last part of the session is spent practicing on a fat quarter that she'll provide (there are lots of fabrics that are great for practicing, just follow the print).  You’ll get a little bit of quilting done on this and the homework is to take it home and do lots more practicing.
In the second session she'll cover marking options, ways to transfer designs onto the quilt, and some tips for deciding what motifs/designs to use.  This session's exercise involves using the Golden Threads paper with a design that she'll provide. Each student brings at least one quilt top and we have a group discussion on suggestions for how to quilt it.

Supplies needed are as follows:

Required Supplies:

  •          Sewing machine in good working order (foot control and power cord too!!)
  •          Large acrylic table to surround bed of machine (preferred) -OR- slide on tray for machine to extend working surface
  •          2 - 20" squares of muslin or a fabric that you just want to use up!
  •          1 - 20" square of a medium to dark plain fabric
  •          Blue wash-away marking pen, chalk pencil, or Clover white marking pen, whatever shows up on your medium/dark fabric
  •          Size 1 safety pins
  •          Good quality thread for quilting. Innovatech (cottonized polyester) and Signature (cotton) are available in the shop; I also use high sheen polyesters like Glide and Isacord, as well as fine silks from YLI and Superior (Kimono).
  •          Sewing machine needles - Sharps - sizes 70 to 80 depending on thread
  •          Free motion quilting foot - for example #9, #24 for Bernina machines.  I prefer a round foot rather than an oblong one.
  •          Scissors or snips
  •          Old needle for sewing through paper
  •          12" to 24" ruler
  •          Pencil for taking notes

Optional Supplies:

  •          Batting scraps (20" square) - if you don't have any, we've got lots!
  •          Golden Threads Tracing Paper
  •          Quilting Gloves, Quilt-Sew-Easy Disks or Rings, or pieces of shelf liner to use for traction on the quilt
  •          Free motion quilting resources (books and/or videos) from famous people like Angela Walters, Karlee Porter, Leah Day, Diane Gaudynski, Harriet Hargrave, Karen McTavish, Sue Nickels, Renae Haddadin....
